LayUp Cookie Policy

Effective date: [Insert on publication] Last updated: [Insert on publication]

Plain-English summary

  • What cookies are. Small text files (and similar bits of data, such as browser local storage) that websites store on your device to make them work, remember your preferences or measure how they're used.
  • What we use them for. Mostly to make LayUp work properly. We also use Google Analytics to understand how people use the site — but only if you give us permission via the cookie banner.
  • We don't use marketing or advertising cookies at launch. If we add them in future, we'll ask for your separate consent.
  • Your choice. You can change your cookie preferences at any time via the Cookie settings link in the footer of every page, or by clearing cookies in your browser.

1. About this policy

1.1 This Cookie Policy explains how LayUp Ltd ("LayUp", "we", "us", "our") uses cookies and similar technologies on the websites layupsport.com and app.layupsport.com (together, the "Sites").

1.2 This policy should be read together with our Privacy Policy and Terms and Conditions.

1.3 We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time. The effective date at the top shows when it was last changed.

2. What we mean by "cookies"

2.1 A cookie is a small text file that a website places on your device (computer, phone or tablet) when you visit it. Cookies allow the website to recognise your device on subsequent visits and to store information about your interaction with the site.

2.2 In this policy, "cookies" includes other similar technologies — such as browser local storage, session storage, and pixel tags — that may be used to store or access information on your device for similar purposes. Regulation 6 of the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003 ("PECR") applies to all of these similarly.

2.3 Cookies (and the equivalents above) can be:

  • First-party, set by LayUp directly;
  • Third-party, set by another organisation whose service we use (such as Google Analytics);
  • Session, deleted when you close your browser; or
  • Persistent, remaining on your device for a set period.

3. What we currently set

The table below describes what LayUp currently stores on your device. Some entries are technically browser local-storage items rather than cookies in the strict sense, but PECR treats them the same way; we list them here for transparency.

3.1 Strictly necessary (no consent required)

These are essential for the Sites to function. They cannot be switched off. Without them you would not be able to log in, complete a booking, or have us remember your privacy choices. We rely on the "strictly necessary" exemption in regulation 6(4) of PECR for these.

WhatWhere storedPurposeDuration

Anti-CSRF / session-state valuesFirst-party cookies, set as neededProtects forms (e.g. signup, booking) against cross-site request forgerySession

3.2 Analytics (consent required)

These help us understand how the Sites are used — which pages are visited, where visitors come from, and which features are working well. They are only set if you accept analytics cookies on the cookie banner.

WhatProviderPurposeDuration
_gaGoogle Analytics 4 (third-party)Distinguishes unique usersUp to 2 years; we configure GA4 to retain analytics data for 14 months
_ga_<measurement_id>Google Analytics 4 (third-party)Maintains session stateUp to 2 years; we configure GA4 to retain analytics data for 14 months

We configure Google Analytics with IP-address anonymisation enabled. We use Google's Consent Mode v2, which means GA4 receives no analytics tags until you have given consent through our banner.

3.3 Marketing

We do not currently set marketing or advertising cookies on the Sites. If we introduce them in future (for example, for advertising or remarketing), we will update this policy and ask for your separate, granular consent before any such cookie is set.

3.4 Cookies set by third parties when you click off-site

When you proceed to pay for a booking we redirect you to Stripe's hosted checkout (checkout.stripe.com). Stripe's cookies are set by that domain, not by LayUp, and are governed by Stripe's own cookie policy. Where you are handed off to a venue's own booking site to complete a booking, that site's cookies are similarly governed by the venue's or platform's own policy.

4. How we ask for your consent

4.1 The first time you visit either of the Sites you will see a cookie banner. The banner allows you to:

(a) Accept all non-essential cookies; (b) Reject all non-essential cookies; or (c) Manage preferences — choose category by category.

4.2 The strictly necessary cookies and similar storage described in section 3.1 are set without your prior consent, in reliance on the PECR exemption. All other cookies (currently: analytics) are set only after you have given consent through the banner.

4.3 Your choice is recorded in the layup_consent first-party cookie. If you clear this cookie (for example, by clearing your browser data) you will be asked to choose again on your next visit.

4.4 You can change your choice at any time using the Cookie settings link in the footer of every page on the Sites, or by re-opening the banner from your account settings.

5. How to control cookies in your browser

5.1 In addition to the cookie banner described in section 4, you can control cookies through your browser settings. Most browsers allow you to see what cookies you have and delete them; block third-party cookies; block cookies from particular sites; block all cookies; or delete all cookies when you close the browser.

5.2 Note that blocking strictly necessary cookies and equivalent storage will prevent the Sites from functioning properly (for example, you will not be able to log in or make a booking).

5.3 Helpful browser guides:

  • Chrome: support.google.com/chrome
  • Safari (macOS): support.apple.com
  • Safari (iOS): support.apple.com
  • Firefox: support.mozilla.org
  • Edge: support.microsoft.com

5.4 You can also opt out of Google Analytics tracking by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on, in addition to or instead of using our cookie banner.

6. Do Not Track

The Sites do not currently respond to "Do Not Track" browser signals, as no consistent industry standard for doing so has been established. If a recognised standard emerges we will respond to it accordingly.

7. Changes to this policy

If we materially change the cookies we use, or the way we ask for consent, we will update this policy and (where the change is material) re-prompt the cookie banner so you can review your choice.
